چکیده

A prenova model, consisting of a white dwarf unstably burning a shell of accreted hydrogen, was tested for stability against radial pulsations. The pulsational analysis included terms due to thermal imbalance. The model was found to be pulsationally unstable in all of the modes examined, save one in which the thermal-imbalance integrals made the crucial damping contribution. An evaluation of some uncertainties in the present analysis is followed by a more general discussion in which it is concluded that multimodal radial pulsational instability can occur in a wide variety of thermally unstable, shell-burning stars. A brief discussion of some consequences of such instability, including its possible connection with the rapid blue variables, concludes the

On the Stability of Very Massive Primordial Stars

The stability of metal-free very massive stars (Z = 0; M = 120 − 500M⊙) is analyzed and compared with metalenriched stars. Such zero-metal stars are unstable to nuclear-powered radial pulsations on the main sequence, but the growth time scale for these instabilities is much longer than for their metal-rich counterparts. Since they stabilize quickly after evolving off the ZAMS, the pulsation may...

Photometric observations of the nucleus of IC 418

We discuss the observational characteristics of a recently proposed class of variable central stars of planetary nebulae. We summarize previous observations of the nucleus of IC 418, a prototype star of this class, and we analyze new photometry of this object, obtained in 1989 and 1991. We confirm that the characteristic timescale of the photometric variations is a fewhours. No single period can...

We analyze the possible existence of a pulsational instability excited by the ǫ-mechanism during the last few centuries of evolution of a Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf prior to its explosion as a Type Ia supernova. Our analysis is motivated by the temperature sensitivity of the nuclear energy generation rate (∼ T 23) in a white dwarf whose structural adiabatic index is near 4/3. Based upon a l...

A fresh look into pulsating PG1159 stars

To improve the understanding of the pulsational instabilities of some of the PG1159-type pre-white dwarfs we performed detailed stability analyses on helium star evolutionary models. With the canonical chemical compositions, pulsational instabilities were encountered for all stellar masses considered (0.57, 0.63, 0.7 M⊙). The blue boundary agrees satisfactorily with observations. The red edge, ...
